The solution to “monster” GEMs: physician specialty ICD-9 to ICD-10 mapping

June 14, 2016:

One of drawbacks to the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs) that link ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM is the sheer size of the document. For 2016, the GEMs spanned more than a thousand pages when printed on a standard 8.5” by 11” page. While it’s helpful at times to have a very detailed resource, GEMs can be overwhelming for physician specialty-focused mapping.

Fortunately, there is a solution to these “monster” GEMS; i.e., specialty mapping that focuses on the most common medical conditions that a specialist is likely to see. These are contained in the four ICD-10-CM Coding Workbooks published by Optum360. The table below shows the specialty and the medical conditions covered in the mapping tables. Note: The 2016 editions of the ICD-10-CM Coding Workbooks are available now and the 2017 editions will be available in October.

Each of the ICD-10-CM Coding Workbooks feature about 50 case studies, with about 150 questions and detailed answer rationales that explain optimal code selection strategy. Plus you can earn 10 CEUs from AAPC when you pass the online exam.
