The solution to “monster” GEMs: physician specialty ICD-9 to ICD-10 mapping

One of drawbacks to the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs) that link ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM is the sheer size of the document. For 2016, the GEMs spanned more than a thousand pages when printed on a standard 8.5” by 11” page. While it’s helpful at times to have a very detailed resource, GEMs can be overwhelming for physician specialty-focused mapping.

Fortunately, there is a solution to these “monster” GEMS; i.e., specialty mapping that focuses on the most common medical conditions that a specialist is likely to see. These are contained in the four ICD-10-CM Coding Workbooks published by Optum360. The table below shows the specialty and the medical conditions covered in the mapping tables. Note: The 2016 editions of the ICD-10-CM Coding Workbooks are available now and the 2017 editions will be available in October.
