Hospice Compare

October 17, 2017:

In August, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) unveiled a new website providing quality of care information for patients. The website, which went live on August 16, is called Hospice Compare. This website provides data from the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP) on hospice quality measures for hospice programs across the country. The intent of the website is to allow consumers to compare hospice performance by providing:

  • A quality of care snapshot in a ready-to-use format for each participating hospice in the geographic area
  • Quality ratings that patients and family members can understand and that can be used to select the appropriate hospice provider

CMS has been working toward making healthcare quality information more transparent and understandable for consumers for a number of years, and this new compare website joins other CMS compare applications for physicians, hospitals, and other sites of service. There are seven National Quality Forum (NQF) endorsed Hospice Item Set (HIS) quality measures currently displayed on the Hospice Compare website:

  • Hospice and Palliative Care - Treatment Preferences - NQF #1641
  • Hospice and Palliative Care - Beliefs/Values Addressed - NQF #1647
  • Hospice and Palliative Care - Pain Screening - NQF #1634
  • Hospice and Palliative Care - Pain Assessment - NQF #1637
  • Hospice and Palliative Care - Dyspnea Screening - NQF #1639
  • Hospice and Palliative Care - Dyspnea Treatment - NQF #1638
  • Hospice and Palliative Care - Patients treated with opioids who are given a bowel regimen - NQF #1617

A planned update in winter 2018 will add additional data from the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems (CAHPS®) Hospice survey information.

As providers discuss end-of-life care with their patients and family members, the new Hospice Compare website can be shared with them and the purpose and use of the website can be explained. The website can be searched by hospice provider name or ZIP Code. If ZIP Code is used, all participating hospices in the geographic area are displayed, and the user can select multiple hospices to compare. On the initial pages, the hospice name, ownership type (government, for profit, other), date certified and phone number are provided. It is here that specific hospices are selected for comparison. Once the compare is performed, data collected and reported by each hospice is displayed side-by-side showing quality of care scores for each measure.

Hospice providers should access the data to preview their quality measure results prior to the November 2017 Hospice Compare refresh.
