New Place-of-Service Code for Temporary Housing

November 27, 2007:
Effective April 1, 2008, providers will have another place of service (POS) code to choose from. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) has developed new place-of-service code 16 to indicate temporary housing.

16        Temporary lodging (April 1, 2008)
A short-term accommodation such as a hotel, campground, hostel, cruise ship, or resort where the patient receives care, and which is not identified by any other POS code.

The POS code set is valid under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations and, for covered entities, Medicare must use the POS codes from the national POS code set for processing electronically submitted claims. Medicare must also recognize POS codes from the POS code set as valid when these codes appear on such a claim.

Incorrect POS codes can result in claim denials or incorrect payment. This is because Medicare and many other payers determine the payment rate (facility or nonfacility) by the POS indicated on the claim. Payment for Part B services is usually lower when the services are performed in a facility since the provider does not incur the same costs as if the services were performed in a nonfacility setting. POS code 16 Temporary lodging, will be paid at the nonfacility rate.
