2009 HCPCS Level II Update: New Codes

December 9, 2008:

The dozens of new HCPCS Level II codes released in the 2009 update are wide ranging. They were added to 10 chapters and describe such diverse things as compression wrap, saliva analysis, and pelvic fracture treatment.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released the update for HCPCS Level II codes in November. They are effective January 1, 2009. This year, the scheduled code release was quickly followed by a reposting with additional changes not included in the initial release. The complete version of this revised annual update is on the HCPCS website at: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/HCPCSReleaseCodeSets/ANHCPCS/list.asp.

This article, part 1 of 2, discusses new codes effective since the last annual update. HCPCS code additions, changes, and deletions are released quarterly. Some of the codes on the following list were added mid-year.

The second part of this article discusses deleted codes, as well as revised and reinstated codes. Changes made to the G codes used as part of the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) program will be addressed separately in a future article.

New code series Q4100–Q4114 was added for skin substitute products, replacing J7340–J7349 and C9357, which were discontinued. CMS noted that these changes are to improve coding accuracy only.
