CMS to Implement New Edit in Carrier Processing System

February 26, 2008:
Effective April 1, 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will implement a recurring edit module in the carrier processing system to allow program safeguard contractors (PSCs) or CMS to monitor beneficiary and provider numbers they have identified as problematic. The new edits will be especially helpful when identity theft is suspected, but it may slow down legitimate claims.

The affiliated contractors (ACs) and/or Medicare administrative contractors (MACs) and the PSCs will comply with requests from PSCs and/or CMS to implement the edits. The ACs/MACs will implement parameters for those edits/audits within 60 days of when the file containing the parameters becomes available for NDM. The edits/audits will be updated via recurring update notification.
