2011 HCPCS Level II Code Set Released

November 12, 2010:
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has posted the 2011 HCPCS Level II code set to its website. This code set is used primarily to report supplies but also contains codes for specific procedures and services that are not described by or cannot be reported using a CPT code. Level II codes are a designated code set under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

For 2011 there are 147 new codes, including eight new modifiers, 18 new C codes used to report outpatient PPS services, and 28 new J codes for reporting drugs and biologicals. There are also 82 new G codes; G codes are used to report quality measures under the Physician Quality Reporting System.

There are 286 codes that have been deleted. Included in this are a number of G codes, L codes used to report orthotics, and S codes used by non-Medicare payers.

There are also a number of codes that have been revised, including six modifiers. Providers should review the code changes and make any necessary revisions to their billing forms and coding policies.
